Are There Benefits To Using A Smaller Digital Agency?

Posted on Thursday January 16, 2020

You're ready to take the plunge and want to refresh your entire online presence. So... who do you choose? Where do you look?

It's nearly impossible to base your opinions on a single source nowadays, as everyone seems to have their own ratings or reviews and even word of mouth doesn't always pan out.

Let's face it. Choosing an agency is HARD.

The big players make sure they appear at the top of every website, social network and display channel you can imagine. It must work for them, but how can you be sure they know what's best for you? Also, what about the smaller agencies?

There are pros and cons to both small and large digital agencies, but these vary depending on your knowledge, budget, and overall business needs. Taking a high level look at both types of agencies we can see some of the benefits and potential drawbacks.

The Big Agency

Pros

  • Access to some premium tools reserved for large spending organizations.
  • A well known name that instills trust.

Cons

  • Revolving doors. Typical agency employee tenure is 2 years (in Toronto). You may get a new account manager more often than you would think.
  • Falling on deaf ears. Unless your budget is high enough, you will likely be lower priority than flagship clients, and could be treated accordingly.

The Small Agency

Pros

  • Single point of contact for all services. Typically you will have one client manager that can handle all aspects of your account.
  • No need for submitting tickets and waiting days for resolution. Smaller agencies can have very flexible hours which allow for speedy turnaround.

Cons

  • New technologies and products may require outsourcing, but this is directly dependent on the expertise and number of employees specializing in certain areas.

These are obviously only some of the factors that need to be taken into account when planning a project as important as defining, launching and managing your online presence.

Speak with as many agencies as you can, and do not settle for something you are not completely comfortable with.
